Other Web Resources
The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging recently released a variety of new legal and financial resources on the website, providing helpful tips to older LGBT adults including:
-An interactive state-by-state map featuring LGBT resources available by state
–Articles on the legal documents every LGBT older adult should have, such as Advance Medical Directives , Revocable Living Trusts, Financial Powers of Attorney and more
–Videos that illustrate the legal and financial issues unique to LGBT older adults
–Publications to help LGBT elders get a jumpstart on their legal and financial planning and
-Various multimedia resources explaining Social Security and its importance to LGBT elders. These online resources also span the many issues affecting LGBT older adults from housing and HIV/AIDS, to retirement and healthcare access and more.
The website materials are designed to encourage older adults to meet with a lawyer specializing in LGBT issues, such as The Fairfax and Fredericksburg Elder Law Firms of Evan H. Farr, P.C., and draft the legal documents needed. This is especially important because end-of-life issues can be of special concern for the LGBT population. Because so few states legally recognize same-sex couples, surviving LGBT partners or spouses, even if they are legally married, could be unable to carry out end-of-life decisions, funeral and burial wishes, become shut out of an inheritance or forfeiture of a family home, and be subjected to other unintended consequences.
