April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month- Furthering Awareness of Parkinson’s Disease

Since 2010, April has been designated as Parkinson’s Awareness Month by the US Senate.  The purpose of Parkinson’s Awareness Month is to reach out to others to promote understanding of the disease, gain support from the community, and further the extensive research already being done to find new treatments and a cure.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the United States, second only to Alzheimer’s disease. It is estimated that the disease affects more than a million people in the United States.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary from person to person and include tremors, difficulty with balance, swallowing, speaking, rigidity, dementia, mood disorders, slowness, and sleep disruptions. Although medications mask some symptoms of Parkinson’s, there is no cure, therapy, or drug to slow or halt the progression of the disease.

Everything Elder Law and Elder Law Plus have featured various posts about Parkinson’s this year, including a celebrity series. We invite you to read these posts to learn more about Parkinson’s disease:
