Veterans Guide to Long Term Care

Farr Veterans Law FirmMr. Garcia is a 73 year old Vietnam Veteran who served in the Marines. He lives at home with his wife and was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He feels disoriented in his neighborhood and has forgotten his way home a few times. His wife worries about his safety. Luckily, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has recently developed a new online Guide to Long Term Care, for people like the Garcias, to help with important decisions about long-term care.

The Guide to Long Term Care provides descriptions of home and community-based services, as well as nursing homes and residential setting options for veterans. It also includes:

  • Long-term care options and lists services that VA pays for and some that are new and emerging or that are not covered;
  • VA monetary benefits for qualifying veterans, including Veterans Aid and Attendance;
  • Details on how to pay for long-term care;
  • Decision aids, including the Shared Decision Making Worksheet (for veterans) and the Caregiver Self-Assessment;
  • Four personal stories, including the example above, created from veteran and caregiver experiences, illustrating how to make shared decisions about current and future long term care needs;
  • Links to many helpful websites for veterans and caregivers, as well as sites that help locate long-term care and caregiver support services.
