AARP’s Health Benefits Navigator: A New Tool for Veterans and Caregivers

Dear Oakley,

My father is a veteran and I am his caregiver. All of the benefit options seem really confusing.  Is there an easy place to review and obtain all the available healthcare benefits without all the confusion and headache?

Thanks for your help!

Ben A. Fitz

Dear Ben,

AARP recently released a free online tool that helps veterans and their caregivers easily review health care benefit options offered by the VA and Department of Defense. Those who have used it say it saves time and eliminates stress, helping veterans connect with well-earned benefits.

How does the navigator help?

The new AARP online tool, the Veterans & Military Families Health Benefits Navigator, provides access to critical information about what is required to qualify for healthcare benefits from the VA. The tool can help you:

  • learn more about healthcare benefits provided through the VA and DoD;
  • understand how to qualify for, apply, and enroll in VA healthcare programs;
  • understand how these healthcare benefits may be combined with Medicare and Medicaid to expand options;
  • identify how to get help from representatives who have experience and knowledge of the VA’s process for awarding benefits.
  • learn ways to apply for VA healthcare benefits and organizations that can assist.

AARP also provides free resources for family caregivers, who often play a critical role in helping veterans access the care they need, including the newly updated Military Veterans Caregiving Guide and the Financial Workbook for Veteran and Military Family Caregivers. Other veterans resources available through AARP include Resources to aid veterans, military and families; Discounts and benefits for veterans, military families; and Free program offers aid to military caregivers.
